Chapter Ten

BELLA

“What do we know?” Captain Wells asks. He looks tired. There are dark circles under his eyes, and he looks like he hasn’t eaten in days. He, like me, has no appetite, and his nights are just as sleepless as mine.

“Shelby is fine,” I report. “The hospital has already discharged her. She had scrapes and bruises and some of her skin is burnt, but other than that, there is nothing to worry about. I told her to go home, but I seriously doubt it.”

“What about the explosion?” he asks.

“It was done by one of Collins’s men,” I tell him. “We are still looking into it.”

“And Michael?”

“We found his dead body at the other marked location,” I whisper. “It is completely burnt and unrecognizable. We have sent it for forensics.” I think of the moment Shelby told me the entire situation in a monotone, a glassy look in her eyes. She didn’t seem to be aware of what was going on or who was around her. She was lost in her own thoughts, in a trance, unaware of anything else.

“Damn it!” the captain shouts. “We have to do something! We can’t let this continue!”

“Poor Shelby.” I shake my head. “First Seth and now Michael—this man is some kind of monster!”

“No, monsters aren’t real,” he insists. “He is a human, and we will find him—one way or another.”

“It doesn’t seem possible anymore.”

“We have him,” a voice says. I turn around and see Kevin making his way toward us, pulling a man with him. “We found Aden Tim. He was trying to hide in a homeless squatter area, but we found him.”

“Excellent.” I hurry over to them. “Now you are going to tell us everything. Like where Collins is hiding.”

Aden Tim sneers at me and then spits in my face. I wince, and Kevin punches him in the stomach. “How dare you!”

“Calm down,” I soothe him. “He will pay for it all—soon.”

“Yes, he will,” I hear Shelby say. She is standing at the entrance, seemingly covered in bandages, with a stony look on her face.

“Shelby—” I warn, not liking her expression.

She ignores me, marching to Aden. “One chance. Where is he?”

“As if I would ever tell!” he grunts.

Shelby punches him on the nose, and I hear the sound of cartilage breaking.

“Damn!” Aden grabs his face as blood oozes out. “You broke my nose, you—”

Shelby strikes again, her face contorted in anger like I have never seen before. She grabs him by his hair and slams his head on the wall. He starts to bleed, but Shelby doesn’t seem to care. She bashes his head again and again, with Aden crying out in pain each time.

“Shelby, stop!” I yell as the captain shouts, “Detective, let him go! That is an order!”

But Shelby is ruthless. She throws him on the floor and starts to kick him in the stomach. Aden curls up in a ball, trying to protect himself. Shelby kneels down and grabs him by the collar, snarling, “Where is he? Tell me where he is.
